Ebonyi NUJ Boycotts Senator Ken Eze Over Alleged Assault on Chairman After APC Primary

Date:

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ebonyi State Council, has reportedly placed Senator Ken Eze on its blacklist following allegations that he assaulted the state NUJ Chairman, Comrade Samson Nwafor, during a political dispute in Onueke, the headquarters of Ezza South Local Government Area.

The incident reportedly occurred on Monday shortly after the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election for the Ebonyi Central Senatorial District at the council headquarters.

According to reports, tension arose after Senator Eze allegedly confronted the NUJ chairman over media coverage he considered unfavorable to his political activities and re-election ambition.

Eyewitness accounts indicated that the argument became heated and later escalated, with some of the senator’s aides and supporters allegedly attacking the NUJ chairman during the confrontation.

The situation reportedly caused unrest at the venue, prompting journalists, party members, and political stakeholders to intervene to prevent further escalation.

Following the development, journalists operating under the NUJ in Ebonyi State reportedly resolved to boycott activities linked to Senator Eze until further instructions are issued by the union leadership.

Members of the union strongly condemned the alleged incident, describing it as an attack on press freedom and a move capable of intimidating journalists in the discharge of their professional duties.

They emphasized that media practitioners in the state would continue to uphold professionalism, accountability, and democratic principles despite alleged threats or intimidation.

The incident has continued to generate reactions among journalists, civil society organizations, and political observers across Ebonyi State, with several stakeholders calling for mutual respect and constructive engagement between public office holders and the media.

At the time of filing this report, Senator Ken Eze had not publicly responded to the allegations.
