The Enugu State Government has confirmed the arrest of a woman identified as Mrs. Ogechi John over the alleged death of her nine-year-old stepdaughter, Amanda John, in Enugu State.
According to reports, the suspect, said to be from Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, was arrested by operatives of the Nigeria Police Force following the tragic incident at their residence in Nchatancha, Emene, located in Enugu East Local Government Area.
Sources within the community alleged that the child died after suffering severe physical assault on Sunday afternoon. Neighbours also claimed that the young girl had allegedly endured repeated maltreatment before her death.
Reacting to the incident, the Enugu State Commissioner for Children, Gender Affairs and Social Development, Ngozi Enih, condemned the alleged act and reiterated the state government’s zero tolerance for child abuse and violence against minors.
She stated that the government moved swiftly after receiving information about the incident, leading to the suspect’s arrest. The commissioner further assured residents that the state would closely monitor the investigation and legal proceedings to ensure justice is served promptly.
“The Enugu State Government will not tolerate child abuse, violence, or homicide involving minors. We are committed to ensuring a thorough investigation and speedy prosecution,” she said.
Authorities also warned that anyone found guilty of child abuse or related offences in the state would face the full weight of the law.
The suspect remains in police custody while investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death of the child continue.
