Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, has urged the Nigerian military and other security agencies to institutionalize a reward system aimed at boosting the morale of officers on the frontlines of the nation’s security challenges. He made the appeal on Monday while receiving students from the Senior Course 47 of the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji, led by Commodore Abdulhakeem Olushina Ojebode, during their courtesy visit to the Government House in Abakaliki.
Governor Nwifuru emphasized that officers and men who display outstanding bravery and excellence in securing peace across Nigeria deserve structured incentives. According to him, such a system would not only motivate personnel but also strengthen the nation’s security architecture.
“Institutionalizing a reward system for gallant officers will enhance their commitment and ensure that those putting their lives on the line feel valued,” the governor said. “When you deploy someone to confront armed criminals, it’s a life-risking task. There should be something concrete to show appreciation and to secure the welfare of their families in case of any mishap.”
He lamented that recognition is often reserved for top-ranking officials, while those in the field rarely receive due credit. He described the reward system as a powerful tool that could significantly improve the nation’s security outcomes.
The Governor also used the opportunity to advocate for the adoption of indigenous policing systems. He stressed that effective security must be rooted in grassroots intelligence and community participation. He proudly noted that Ebonyi State, beyond political or ethnic sentiments, remains one of the most peaceful states in the country. This, he said, is due to the state’s localized approach to addressing security issues.
In response, Commodore Ojebode explained that their visit was part of a broader environmental study tour, a critical requirement of their academic program. He extended the compliments of the Commandant of the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Air Vice Marshal Hassan Idris Alhaji, and commended the Ebonyi State Government for its strides in democratic development and security.
Speaking on the theme of their study, “Harnessing Grassroots Intelligence for Internal Security,” Ojebode remarked that the students had gained deep insight from observing the security initiatives in Ebonyi. He praised the state’s hospitality and described it as a reflection of Governor Nwifuru’s compassion and dedication to leadership.
The visiting team included Lieutenant Commander C. N. Nwuzor, an indigene of Ebonyi, along with international students from The Gambia, Ghana, Botswana, and Togo. The delegation is also scheduled to tour eight other states, including Abia, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Delta, Imo, Kebbi, Kwara, and Rivers.
Governor Nwifuru concluded by appreciating the efforts of Nigeria’s security forces and cautioned against the use of violence by separatist groups, urging dialogue and peaceful resolutions instead.
