Ebonyi Communities Grapple with Lead Poisoning Amid Mining Activities

Date:

In Ebonyi State, the presence of lead deposits in Enyigba and Ameka communities has become a double-edged sword. While these mineral resources hold the promise of economic prosperity, their extraction has led to severe environmental degradation and health crises.

Residents of these areas report alarming rates of lead-related ailments caused by consuming contaminated crops, vegetables, and water sourced from mining sites. Chief Ewa Nworie, a community leader, lamented the devastating impact of lead on their soil, water, and health, noting that many have no alternative but to endure these hazardous conditions.
