Ebonyi PDP Condemns Political Violence, Urges Peace Ahead of 2027 Elections

Date:

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ebonyi State has condemned political violence and called on politicians, party supporters and other stakeholders to embrace peaceful political engagement ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The party made the call during a peaceful road walk organised by the Concerned Ebonyi Youth for Democracy in Abakaliki, the state capital, on Friday.

The procession, which attracted mainly PDP supporters, commenced at the popular Nkaliki area, moved through the Sperando axis and proceeded along the Enugu-Abakaliki Expressway.

The organisers said the exercise was designed to promote political tolerance, responsible leadership, democratic values and peaceful coexistence in Ebonyi State and Nigeria.

Participants carried placards with messages advocating good governance, respect for citizens’ rights and a violence-free political environment.

Some of the inscriptions included “Say no to thuggery”, “Ebonyi youths stand for peace, not violence” and “We seek a society where citizens can speak, assemble and live without fear.”

Other messages emphasised the need to protect freedom of expression, uphold the Nigerian Constitution and respect the rights of citizens, including those with opposing political views.

The participants also called for an environment where residents could freely express their opinions and participate in democratic activities without intimidation or threats.

Speaking during the event, the National President of the Odozi-Obodo Youth Movement, Mr Mark Onu, said political activities should be guided by constructive dialogue, mutual respect and the collective interest of the people.

Onu urged political leaders and their supporters to tolerate opposing opinions and avoid hostility, intimidation and personal attacks in their political engagements.

Similarly, a youth leader, Mr Nnanna Nwangene, maintained that violence and intimidation were incompatible with democratic principles.

He called on political parties, supporters and other stakeholders to maintain peaceful conduct before, during and after the 2027 general elections.

Nwangene also identified transparency, accountability, good governance and people-oriented policies as essential factors for sustainable development.

He stressed that elected officials must remain accountable to the electorate and ensure that the benefits of democracy translate into better living conditions for residents.

Another leader, Chief Rostick Eze, explained that the road walk was intended to encourage young people to participate actively in governance and demand responsible leadership through peaceful and lawful means.

Eze advised Ebonyi youths to reject political thuggery, hate speech and other activities capable of undermining the state’s peace and stability.

Also speaking, Mr Jerry Uhuo appealed to political parties and their supporters to place the welfare of citizens above partisan interests.

He urged residents to support initiatives that promote peaceful coexistence, democratic participation and sustainable development in Ebonyi State.

The organisers reiterated the importance of peaceful political competition and responsible leadership as preparations gradually gather momentum for the 2027 general elections.
