The Ebonyi State Police Command has dismissed reports alleging that its Commissioner of Police demanded ₦700,000 from each of six families before their sons, who were arrested over a land dispute, could be released.
The allegation was circulated on social media by a man identified as Justice Ozobi, who claimed that the suspects were arrested following the intervention of a traditional ruler in Ebonyi State.
However, the Ebonyi Police Command, in a statement issued on Tuesday and signed by its spokesperson, SP Joshua Ukandu, described the claim as false, baseless and unsupported by facts.
According to the police, the social media publication contained several inconsistencies, including typographical errors and incoherent claims, which the Command said raised questions about its credibility.
The police also disputed the photograph attached to the allegation, explaining that the image was not that of the current Commissioner of Police in Ebonyi State but belonged to a former Commissioner who had retired from service.
“The picture used in the post is that of the long-retired former Commissioner of Police, Ebonyi State Command,” the statement noted, adding that the use of the photograph showed an apparent failure to properly verify the information before publishing the allegation.
The Command further clarified that the police does not handle land disputes, rejecting any attempt to connect the Commissioner of Police or the Ebonyi State Police Command with the alleged demand for money in relation to the matter.
It described the allegation as serious and malicious, saying it could damage the reputation and integrity of the Commissioner of Police while distracting the Command from its responsibility of protecting lives and property and maintaining peace across Ebonyi State.
The police said it remains committed to professionalism, discipline, accountability and transparency in the discharge of its duties.
It added that credible allegations of misconduct involving police officers would be properly investigated whenever they are brought forward.
The Ebonyi State Police Command challenged Justice Ozobi to provide evidence to substantiate his claim that ₦700,000 was demanded from each of the affected families.
The Command cautioned against using social media to circulate unverified allegations, particularly claims capable of misleading members of the public or damaging the reputation of individuals and institutions.
It urged the public to exercise restraint and verify information before sharing it online.
The police also warned that individuals who deliberately publish or circulate false, malicious or defamatory information could face legal consequences.
According to the Command, appropriate legal action would be taken against anyone found to have deliberately disseminated false or defamatory claims in violation of the law.
