The family of the late Mary Habila, popularly known as Mara, has disclosed that she died from cardiac arrest linked to a congenital heart condition.
Habila, who had reportedly been diagnosed with a hole in her heart, died on June 27, 2026, at the age of 25.
She was buried on August 21 in her hometown of Nok, Jaba Local Government Area of Kaduna State, following weeks of public interest and speculation about the circumstances surrounding her death.
A biography presented during her burial detailed her upbringing, education, career journey and prolonged battle with the heart condition.
According to her family, Mary’s health deteriorated despite receiving medical attention, prayers and support from relatives and loved ones.
The family said, “Mary lived with a heart condition, having been diagnosed with a hole in her heart. Despite medical care and prayers, her condition became critical. She sadly passed away following a cardiac arrest, leaving behind a deep void in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.”
Born on September 18, 2000, Mary was remembered by her family as a sincere, respectful and cheerful young woman.
She was raised in the Deeper Life Bible Church, where her father serves as a pastor. During her childhood and teenage years, she participated actively in the church’s children’s choir and later became involved in the youth ministry.
Habila began her professional career as a Community Health Extension Worker in Nasarawa State before relocating to Abuja.
In Abuja, she worked with Cherry Hills Pharmacy and subsequently served as a personal nurse to Minister of Works, David Umahi.
Her death attracted significant public attention after she was reportedly found unresponsive at Umahi’s residence in Ebonyi State.
The police said she was taken to the David Umahi Federal University Teaching Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Amid initial questions surrounding her death, there were calls for an autopsy to determine the cause. However, the family subsequently stated that Mary’s long-standing congenital heart condition had ultimately resulted in cardiac arrest.
The family said her brief life would continue to be remembered for her resilience, kindness and the positive impact she had on those around her.
“Though her life was short, Mary will always be remembered for her strength in adversity, the love she shared, and the lasting impact she made on everyone blessed to know her,” the family stated.
