The management of has confirmed an attack on its female hostel by hoodlums, dismissing reports that the incident involved bandits.
The Provost of the institution, Princess Chetachi Usulor, confirmed the incident on Wednesday, stating that no student was missing after the attack, although nine students sustained injuries.
The attack reportedly occurred in the early hours of June 8, when the assailants invaded the female hostel and allegedly stole phones, money, ATM cards, and other valuables belonging to students.
According to Usulor, the attackers entered the hostel and began demanding valuables from students. Upon receiving information about the incident, she immediately contacted security agencies, including the police, homeland security personnel, and other relevant authorities.
“I contacted the police control room, the divisional police headquarters, and homeland security personnel. When security officers and residents began arriving, the hoodlums fled,” she said.
The provost explained that the security breach may have been aided by the institution’s unfenced areas, noting that although the state government had previously provided funds for fencing, more resources are needed to complete the project.
She added that the attackers escaped through one of the access routes around the campus after noticing the arrival of security personnel.
Usulor clarified that the injuries recorded were not from direct attacks by the hoodlums but occurred as some students attempted to escape from the hostel building.
She said some students who were staying on the upper floor sustained injuries after jumping from windows out of fear while trying to protect themselves and their belongings.
The affected students were taken to the hospital for medical checks, including scans and X-rays, to determine the severity of their injuries.
“About nine students are receiving medical care. We want to ensure there are no complications before they are discharged,” the provost stated.
She also refuted claims that students were missing, insisting that all students had been accounted for following the incident.
However, the provost revealed that there were concerns the attackers may have received information from an insider, following reports that some victims said the assailants repeatedly asked about the whereabouts of a particular person.
On hostel security arrangements, Usulor explained that the institution currently has male security personnel stationed outside the female hostel due to access restrictions, but plans are underway to engage female security officers.
She further disclosed that the security personnel on duty during the attack were being questioned by the police as investigations into the incident continue.
