Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has issued a strong warning to about 11,500 newly admitted students of Ebonyi State University (EBSU), urging them to steer clear of cultism, examination malpractice, and other forms of misconduct that could jeopardize their academic future.
The governor delivered the message during the 28th matriculation ceremony of the university held at its permanent campus in Ezzangbo, Ohaukwu Local Government Area, describing the intake as the institution’s largest since the creation of Ebonyi State in 1996.
Represented by the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Donatus Ilang, Nwifuru reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to strengthening higher education through sustained investment and institutional reforms.
According to him, the state government has implemented several measures to reposition the university, including increased monthly subventions, salary improvements for staff, infrastructure development, and settlement of outstanding financial obligations aimed at restoring academic excellence.
He advised the newly matriculated students to prioritize their studies and maintain discipline throughout their academic journey.
“The primary reason for being in the university is academic pursuit. Any behaviour capable of disrupting your education will attract strict sanctions,” the governor warned.
The Vice Chancellor of Ebonyi State University, Prof. Michael Ugota, also called on students to demonstrate good character and avoid actions capable of tarnishing their reputation and that of the institution.
He urged lecturers to remain committed to mentorship and quality teaching while upholding professional ethics in their engagement with students.
Prof. Ugota disclosed that the university management has intensified efforts to eliminate cult-related activities and other social vices on campus, noting that strict policies are already in place to curb examination malpractice, sexual harassment, and extortion.
Highlighting recent institutional progress, the Vice Chancellor revealed that five out of seven academic programmes recently reviewed secured full accreditation, a development he described as a significant milestone for the university.
He further announced that EBSU has achieved full digitalization of its administrative and academic processes, enabling students to register courses, access academic services, and pay fees online.
Prof. Ugota reaffirmed the university’s commitment to maintaining high academic standards and commended Governor Nwifuru for prioritizing education, noting that ongoing investments would produce long-term benefits for students and the state.
