The Ebonyi State Government has approved an extension of its scholarship programme for beneficiaries currently enrolled in master’s degree programmes, allowing them to progress into doctoral (PhD) studies as part of a strategic effort to strengthen human capital development in the state.
The decision, authorised by the Ebonyi State Scholarship Board, aligns with the administration’s long-term vision to cultivate a highly skilled and academically robust workforce for the future.
According to a statement issued by Leo Oketa, Special Assistant to the Governor on New Media, several scholars are expected to complete their master’s programmes this month, while others will finish by mid-year. The board has directed these beneficiaries to begin formal applications to universities, ensuring a seamless transition into PhD research and academic tracks where eligible.
Oketa described the scholarship extension as part of “a well-structured and long-term strategy” rather than a short-term intervention, with the administration placing significant emphasis on education as a cornerstone of sustainable development.
He added that the initiative is designed to promote academic excellence, leadership development and global exposure for Ebonyi indigenes, positioning the state as a strong advocate for education-driven growth.
The scholarship scheme was launched nearly a year ago under Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru’s administration, which saw more than 200 indigenes sponsored to pursue postgraduate studies in the United Kingdom, and over 500 others placed in reputable Nigerian universities.
The extension is expected to further enhance the state’s growing pool of highly trained manpower, reinforcing efforts to fill critical skills gaps and contribute meaningfully to socioeconomic progress.
