FRSC Confirms Six Dead in Awka–Onitsha Expressway Crash

Date:

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed that six people lost their lives in a fatal accident along the Awka–Onitsha Expressway on Friday night. The tragic crash occurred at the Nawfia axis, close to Enugu-Agidi Junction, and involved a commercial bus and a tipper truck.

Anambra State Sector Commander of the FRSC, Mrs. Bridget Asekhauno, told journalists that the deadly collision was caused by reckless and dangerous overtaking. According to her, the crash involved a yellow-and-black tipper (registration FGG21XV) and a red bus (XQ398AA).

Eyewitnesses reported that the bus was travelling from Ebonyi State to Onitsha after a Catholic Women Organisation burial when the driver attempted a risky overtaking manoeuvre, resulting in a head-on collision with the oncoming truck.

A total of 32 passengers were onboard—nine men and 23 women. The crash killed six people (two men and four women) and left five women injured, while 21 others escaped without harm.

The injured victims and the bodies of the deceased were taken to Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu Teaching Hospital, Amaku, where medical personnel confirmed the deaths. FRSC officials later cleared the roadway to ease traffic congestion on the busy expressway.

Describing the tragedy as completely avoidable, Asekhauno stressed the dangers of reckless driving and urged motorists to prioritise safety, avoid speeding, and refrain from aggressive overtaking. She also reiterated the FRSC’s commitment to road safety enforcement and emergency response.

In a separate incident on the Oyo–Ogbomoso highway, eight people were also confirmed dead and four others injured in another road crash earlier in the week. The survivors are receiving treatment at the State Hospital in Oyo, according to the FRSC.
