The Government of Bulgaria has expressed its commitment to partner with the Ebonyi State Government in establishing a 1,200-bed Multifunctional University Teaching Hospital aimed at strengthening healthcare delivery and promoting international medical collaboration in Nigeria.
According to Mr. Ruben Pirontchev, the Chargé d’Affaires of the Bulgarian Embassy in Abuja, the embassy is closely monitoring the proposed hospital project and sees it as a milestone in deepening diplomatic and development relations between Bulgaria and Nigeria.
“The Embassy will remain fully supportive of this initiative,” Pirontchev said during a meeting with a Bulgarian investor delegation led by Ms. Velichka Stamenova, Team Lead of Neuro Pharma Group Ltd. “We have many skilled Bulgarian professionals ready to contribute to impactful projects like this.”
He also commended Ambassador Young Piero Omatsaye, Africa Coordinator of Jet Age Nation Builders, for facilitating the partnership, describing him as a bridge between Europe and Nigeria and a strong advocate for sustainable development.
Pirontchev lauded the Ebonyi State Government for prioritizing healthcare, emphasizing that the proposed hospital would not only improve access to quality medical services but also foster enduring Bulgaria–Nigeria relations.
Leading the state delegation, Hon. Solomon Azi, Commissioner for Grants and Donor Agencies, reaffirmed the government’s dedication to the project.
“Our governor is passionate about improving healthcare for all citizens,” Azi said. “This project reflects his vision of making accessible and quality healthcare a reality for every resident of Ebonyi State.”
Ambassador Omatsaye further explained that the university hospital project would be implemented in phases—from construction to equipping and management—to ensure long-term sustainability. He noted that Ebonyi State would contribute 30% of the total funding, while Neuro Pharma Ltd and its partners from Bulgaria, Turkey, and Rwanda would provide between 40% and 70%. The partnership will also include training programs to enhance local medical capacity.
“This initiative goes beyond building a hospital,” Omatsaye said. “It’s about establishing a sustainable healthcare system that serves future generations.”
Ms. Stamenova highlighted that Ebonyi was chosen due to its strong governance and readiness for international investment.
“This is a comprehensive project covering all aspects of modern healthcare,” she noted. “With the Bulgarian Embassy’s backing and our Nigerian partners’ support, this facility will stand as a model of medical excellence in Africa.”
Once completed, the 1,200-bed University Teaching Hospital is expected to be one of the largest and most advanced medical facilities in Nigeria, significantly boosting healthcare infrastructure in Ebonyi State and positioning Bulgaria as a key player in Africa’s health sector development.
