Ebonyi Government Provides ₦100m Relief to Afikpo Flood Victims

Date:

The Ebonyi State Government has distributed cash and relief materials worth ₦100 million to victims of the recent flood disaster in Enohia Itim and Kpoghirikpo communities, Afikpo Local Government Area.

The exercise, which took place on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, was overseen by Acting Governor Patricia Obila, who represented Governor Francis Nwifuru at the event.

The communities were hit by heavy floods between July and August 2025, a disaster that claimed eight lives and displaced hundreds of residents. At the height of the flooding, three bodies were recovered, while five persons remained missing. The incident also destroyed over 800 farmlands, houses, and household properties, leaving families grappling with severe losses.

Families of the eight deceased victims each received ₦1 million in addition to food items and household materials including rice, garri, mattresses, and buckets.

Victims who lost their homes or farmlands were given ₦500,000 each plus relief items.

Other categories of affected residents received ₦250,000 each, alongside similar material support.

Officials explained that the intervention was part of government’s effort to provide succour and help victims rebuild their livelihoods.

The disaster also destroyed over 800 farmlands, raising concerns about food security in the affected areas. Local leaders appreciated the state’s intervention but called for long-term measures such as improved drainage systems and better flood management to prevent future occurrences.

Governor Francis Nwifuru had earlier sympathized with the victims, assuring them of government’s readiness to stand by affected families and communities. He emphasized the need for climate change adaptation and stronger disaster-prevention planning across the state.
