Ebonyi Secondary School Student’s Death Sparks Protest, Police Confirm Three Arrests

Date:

The Ebonyi State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of three suspects in connection with the tragic death of Master Ebuka Chukwu, a Senior Secondary School (SSS 2) student of Federal Government College, FGC Okposi, in Ohaozara Local Government Area.

The police spokesperson, SP Joshua Ukandu, disclosed the arrests on Sunday during a peaceful protest staged by the Okposi-Okwu community, where the late student hailed from.

The protesters carried placards with inscriptions such as “Who killed Ebuka?”, “Evil people are running FGC Okposi” and “IGP, stop the killing and bring justice”, demanding government action and accountability.

Community leader, Mr Collins Agwu, cited an autopsy result which confirmed that Ebuka was killed before being dumped in a stream in an attempt to cover up the crime. He also raised concerns over a staff member of the college, Mr Danjuma, who allegedly ordered Ebuka and other students to confront hoodlums on the day of the incident.

“We want justice to prevail, and those behind Ebuka’s death to be unmasked. The school management is playing politics with this incident,” Agwu said.

Another native, Chiadikaobi Obasi, accused the college of discriminating against indigenous students and staff, warning that the usually peaceful Okposi-Okwu community should not be pushed beyond its limits.

In response, the Vice Principal of FGC Okposi, Mr Ojima O. Emmanuel, expressed shock at the student’s death and assured the protesters of the school’s commitment to cooperate with authorities to unravel the truth.

Sources revealed that the incident occurred on July 27, 2025, when Mr Danjuma allegedly directed Ebuka and other students to face hoodlums—an encounter that allegedly led to his death.

The Ebonyi police said investigations are ongoing, while the community vowed to continue its protests until justice is served.
