The crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the South East has deepened, with strong links to Ebonyi State. The National Vice Chairman of the PDP, South East zone, Chief Chidiebere Goodluck Egwu, has vowed that the party will resist any hijack attempt ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Egwu, in a statement co-signed with the Zonal Organising Secretary, Hon. Mike Ahumibe, condemned a planned “stakeholders’ meeting” at Enugu Government House, describing it as unconstitutional and without effect on the PDP structure in the zone.
The PDP leadership clarified that only the Zonal Vice Chairman has constitutional authority to convene such meetings, reaffirming Egwu’s position as the recognized leader of the party in the South East.
Egwu specifically pointed to Ebonyi State, where former PDP Zonal Chairman, Chief Ali Odefa, was expelled by his ward and local government chapters. That decision, which has since been upheld by a competent court, means Odefa no longer holds any authority within the PDP.
The PDP urged members across the South East to ignore the September 17, 2025 meeting, insisting it was illegal and mischievous. Instead, Egwu assured that the authentic zonal leadership is already working with representatives from all five South East states, including Ebonyi, to convene a legitimate stakeholders’ meeting.
According to Egwu, the forthcoming official gathering will focus on unity, strengthening party structures, and positioning the PDP as the true voice of Ndi Igbo in Nigeria, with Ebonyi playing a key role in shaping the region’s political future ahead of the 2027 elections.
