The Governor of Ebonyi State, Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, has unveiled a strategic initiative to recall Ebonyi indigenes engaged in menial labor across Nigeria. The move is aimed at empowering them through skills training and economic support.
Speaking at a Sunday service held at the Government House Chapel in Abakaliki, Governor Nwifuru decried the poor working conditions and lack of fair wages many Ebonyians face outside the state.
“Our people are being underpaid and undervalued for the hard work they do in other cities. We plan to bring them back and provide them with opportunities that will make them self-reliant,” the governor said.
To actualize this vision, he announced that the state is currently constructing warehouses and skill acquisition centers within the Ebonyi Industrial City. These facilities are designed to aid the reintegration process and equip returnees, especially young people, with relevant skills for sustainable livelihoods.
Governor Nwifuru also touched on governance issues, expressing concern over the subpar performance of certain political appointees. He noted that the recent cabinet reshuffle was a result of their failure to meet the objectives outlined in his administration’s “People’s Charter of Needs.”
“We are still reviewing the performance of all appointees. Where necessary, we won’t hesitate to make further changes,” he stated.
He also called on Ebonyians in the diaspora to ignore negative social media narratives and consider investing in the state. According to him, the government is working to ensure a business-friendly environment to support investors.
“Let’s develop our homeland together. Ebonyi is open for business, and we are creating an enabling atmosphere for growth and investment,” he added.
