From Neighbour to Nightmare: Ebonyi Man Kills Elderly Woman with Shovel

Date:

The Ebonyi State Police Command has apprehended a man, Ezeoke Chidera, for the alleged murder of his neighbour, Mrs. Rose Awoke, aged 60.

According to a statement by the State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Joshua Ukandu, the tragic incident occurred on Monday in Egugho village, located within the Ezzagu community of Ishielu Local Government Area.

SP Ukandu explained that the suspect reportedly used a shovel to repeatedly strike the victim during a dispute, resulting in her death. The police promptly responded to a distress report received around 6:00 a.m. on June 2, 2025, leading to the swift arrest of the suspect.

“We received a report that Ezeoke Chidera, who resided in the same compound as the deceased, launched a violent attack using a shovel and left her in a pool of blood,” the statement read.

The police spokesperson confirmed that an investigation is currently underway to uncover the motive behind the brutal assault.

In a similar case on May 29, 2025, Emmanuel Nwedu, a 40-year-old man, was remanded by Abakaliki Magistrates’ Court II for allegedly murdering his uncle and reportedly drinking his blood. He had no legal counsel during his court appearance and his plea was not taken.
