The Ebonyi State Government has announced plans to establish a metallurgical testing and research institute aimed at improving mineral analysis, driving investment, and boosting internally generated revenue. This move follows the recent acquisition of mineral titles valued at N67 million.
Speaking in Abakaliki, the Commissioner for Solid Minerals Development, Hon. Chidi Onyia, disclosed the state’s intention during an interview, highlighting efforts to transform the state into a mining and industrial hub.
According to Onyia, the government has acquired multiple mineral exploration licenses across all local government areas, giving the state a strategic edge in negotiating with potential investors.
“We now hold key mineral titles for limestone, cement, and salt deposits. This enables us to act as the legal titleholders in discussions with interested companies,” Onyia said.
The Commissioner revealed that investors from China and Russia have shown strong interest in exploring mineral-rich areas in the state, particularly in setting up cement factories. Ebonyi is known for its vast limestone deposits, especially in areas like Izzi, Ishielu, Ebonyi, Ohaukwu, and Afikpo.
However, the state faces legal challenges regarding the Nkalagu Nigercem plant, jointly owned with Ibeto Group. “We are in discussions with Ibeto and are hopeful about establishing a working partnership soon,” Onyia added.
Onyia stressed the state’s stand on ensuring that any salt mined from Uburu and Okposi must be processed locally, not shipped out for refining.
“Over 70% of salt consumed in Nigeria is imported. We aim to change that by encouraging the establishment of salt factories within Ebonyi. Processing must happen here to add value to our economy,” he emphasized.
As part of its strategic mineral development roadmap, the state government is working towards setting up a Metallurgical Institute to support mineral testing and academic research. The institute is expected to be located within one of the state’s higher institutions to ensure continuity and sustainability beyond political administrations.
“This institute will provide mineral testing services and serve as a research center for local and international purposes. It will also help generate revenue for the state,” Onyia said.
The Commissioner further revealed plans for a comprehensive geological survey to identify and document the mineral potential across Ebonyi State. This data will support investment drives by providing verified resources for exploration and exploitation.
“Without verified geological data, it becomes difficult to attract serious investors. We aim to bridge that gap through mineral mapping and proper documentation,” he explained.
With this aggressive mineral development initiative, Ebonyi State is positioning itself as a leading destination for solid mineral investments in Nigeria.
