Ebonyi State Governor, Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, has issued a stern warning against the misuse and diversion of public resources, declaring that offenders will face strict consequences under his administration.
Speaking during the official flag-off of the Health Activation Programme, which includes the Drug Revolving Fund (DRF) and the distribution of medical equipment to all 13 general hospitals in the state, Governor Nwifuru emphasized his zero-tolerance stance on corruption and administrative negligence.
The event, held at the Akanu Ibiam International Conference Centre, Abakaliki, marks a major milestone in the government’s agenda to revamp the state’s health sector. Governor Nwifuru noted that the initiative includes the provision of over ₦1 billion worth of modern medical equipment, positioning Ebonyi to offer improved healthcare services.
He revealed plans to establish specialist hospitals in each of the state’s three senatorial zones, aiming to reduce medical tourism and ensure residents have access to advanced healthcare without traveling long distances.
“This launch is more than a ceremonial event—it is a declaration of intent. Our administration is committed to strengthening the healthcare system and delivering on the health pillar of the People’s Charter of Needs,” the governor said.
He further stated that the Drug Revolving Fund will guarantee consistent availability of essential medicines across all general hospitals. The revolving nature of the fund ensures transparency, sustainability, and accountability.
Governor Nwifuru proudly announced that over 60% of essential drugs have already been delivered and pledged full coverage in the coming weeks. He also announced the recruitment of 195 healthcare professionals, including doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and lab scientists, who have been posted across the hospitals to enhance service delivery.
“Our healthcare system cannot thrive without trained personnel and quality equipment. That’s why we are not just investing in infrastructure, but also in people. We are collaborating with institutions to train and retrain our health workforce to meet global standards,” he explained.
To ensure transparency and prevent resource misuse, the governor called on community leaders, traditional rulers, civil society organizations, and the general public to assist in monitoring and safeguarding these healthcare investments.
“Let this be a new dawn for health in Ebonyi. The health facilities belong to the people, and with ownership comes responsibility. Accountability is not negotiable,” Nwifuru declared.
The event signifies a renewed commitment by the Ebonyi State Government to overhaul the health sector and ensure that no citizen is left behind in accessing quality and affordable healthcare.
