A federal lawmaker, Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, has appealed to the Executive Governor of Ebonyi State, Rt. Hon. Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, to discontinue the ongoing legal proceedings against Comrade Igboayaka O. Igboayaka, National President of the Ohanaeze Youth Council.
Speaking at a press briefing held in his hometown of Akokwa, Imo State, Hon. Ugochinyere—who also serves as the spokesperson of the Nigerian Lawmakers Opposition Coalition—urged the Ebonyi State Government and Police Command to immediately withdraw the charges against the youth leader.
According to him, “This is a passionate plea to Governor Nwifuru and the Ebonyi Police Command. I strongly urge them to end the legal battle against Igboayaka, whose only intent was to raise an alarm to safeguard lives in our beloved Ebonyi State.”
The case follows a statement released by Comrade Igboayaka in early February, where he cautioned security agencies to be on high alert over a possible attack on communities in Ishielu LGA—specifically Obeagu, Nkalaha, and Egedegede. The unfortunate incident occurred days later, stirring public attention.
Igboayaka was subsequently arrested in Owerri on February 9, 2025, by officers of the Ebonyi State Police Command. His arrest was reportedly based on a petition from the Coordinator of Ishielu North Development Centre, Mr. Emmanuel Emeka Odanwu, who expressed concern over the fear generated by the accuracy of Igboayaka’s warning. The youth leader was held at the Ebonyi State Custodial Centre before being granted bail.

In a time when youth participation and proactive engagement are key to community development, many observers have joined the conversation, questioning the necessity of criminalizing a civic alert that may have helped prevent greater harm.
This development continues to stir debate across Ebonyi State, especially within youth and civic advocacy circles.
