In a bid to tackle unemployment and boost economic self-reliance, the Ebonyi State Government is set to empower over 200 local artisans through a comprehensive skills training and entrepreneurship program.
This was confirmed by the Commissioner for Skill Development and Job Creation, Mr. Okwu Oko-Udu, during a media chat in Abakaliki. He stated that Governor Francis Nwifuru has given full approval for the initiative aimed at equipping artisans with practical skills and helping them grow sustainable businesses.
As part of this empowerment drive, an Industrial City is being developed in Ezzamgbo, Ohaukwu Local Government Area, which will serve as a hub for training and business incubation. The project is being executed in partnership with the Ministries of Trade, Investment, Commerce, and Industry.
Mr. Oko-Udu noted that selected participants will receive free shop spaces within the industrial zone, allowing for hands-on supervision and support to help them thrive in their chosen crafts.
He applauded the governor’s efforts to reshape public perception about Ebonyi citizens, especially those involved in informal trading and street hawking. He emphasized the importance of bringing displaced traders—many of whom were affected by recent crackdowns in cities like Lagos—back home with better opportunities.
The commissioner also revealed that the state has inspected several inactive training centers in places like Nkwegu and Izzi, with plans to refurbish them as part of this empowerment strategy.
This initiative reflects the state’s commitment to job creation, skills development, and fostering entrepreneurship for long-term economic growth.
