Ebonyi First Lady Pays N3.2 Million Medical Bills for 16 Indigent Patients

Date:

The First Lady of Ebonyi State, Mrs Mary-Maudline Nwifuru, has settled medical bills totaling N3.2 million for 16 indigent patients receiving treatment at the Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital (AE-FUTHA), Abakaliki.

The humanitarian gesture took place on Friday during her visit to the hospital’s male and female surgical wards as part of activities marking the Easter celebration in the state.

Speaking to the patients—many of whom had remained hospitalised due to outstanding bills—the governor’s wife encouraged them to remain hopeful and continue praying for healing and divine intervention.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the intervention forms part of Mrs Nwifuru’s ongoing efforts to support vulnerable patients and reduce the burden of medical expenses on struggling families in Ebonyi State.

Reacting to the development, the Head of the Medical Social Work Department at the teaching hospital, Dr Sorochi Otu, praised the First Lady for what he described as consistent philanthropic support to patients in need.

Beyond AE-FUTHA, Mrs Nwifuru also extended her Easter outreach to other vulnerable groups across the state.

She paid medical bills for indigent patients at the Rehabilitation Programme EFFATA in Ugbodo, located in Ebonyi Local Government Area.

The First Lady also visited the Trinitarian Foundation for Orphans and the Helpless as well as the Juvenile Remand Home, where she provided financial assistance, relief materials, and gift items.

The Director of EFFATA, Mr Onyibe Nwiboko, and the Reverend Sister in charge of the orphanage, Mary-Agnes Onyejiechi, expressed appreciation for the visit and the support given to patients and children at the facilities.

Similarly, the Head of Child Development at the Ebonyi State Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Development, Mr Emmanuel Nkwuda, commended the First Lady for her role in the reconstruction of the juvenile remand home.

Responding on behalf of beneficiaries at the EFFATA rehabilitation centre, Mr John Nweke thanked Mrs Nwifuru for the visit and the distribution of Easter relief items, describing the support as timely and impactful.
