A protracted land dispute between Umuobor in Akaeze and Ogwor in Ishiagu, both in Ivo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, has escalated into severe violence. For over 50 years, these communities have clashed over the ownership of Elueke, a fertile land. Despite a Supreme Court ruling in favor of Umuobor, tensions have intensified, resulting in loss of lives and property.
In the latest wave of violence, six people were killed, and more than ten others remain missing. Previous incidents included an attack in August when farmers from Umuobor were targeted while harvesting crops. Retaliatory attacks by Ogwor in November left more casualties and widespread fear in the region.
Survivors have shared grim accounts of their experiences. Chukwu Chibuike, one of the victims, narrowly escaped after being ambushed and shot while harvesting potatoes. Injured but determined to survive, he fled into the bush and managed to find help. Another victim, Uzoma Chukwu, was tortured by assailants who tied him to a tree, burned him with tyres, and struck him with machetes. Both men are still recovering from their injuries.
The leaders of both communities continue to trade accusations. Umuobor’s representative, Nkemakolam Johnson, accused Ogwor of disregarding government orders to stay off the land and of launching violent attacks. On the other side, Ogwor’s leader, Emmanuel Ajah, claimed the land originally belonged to his community and was lent to an exiled Umuobor man by their forefathers. He alleged that Umuobor has killed several Ogwor residents and encroached further into their territory.
Efforts to resolve the dispute have faced challenges. The Chairman of Ivo Local Government, Emmanuel Ajah, expressed regret over the continued violence, noting that a plan to partition the disputed land was derailed by the latest killings. Security forces have been deployed to prevent further hostilities, and investigations are ongoing to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Despite these interventions, both communities remain entrenched in their positions, with mistrust and grief deepening the divide. Authorities continue to urge restraint and cooperation to prevent further escalation.
