The Ebonyi State House of Assembly has approved a revised salary structure for local government political office holders in the state, with council chairmen set to receive ₦450,000 monthly and their deputies ₦400,000.
The approval was given on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, following the passage of a Bill seeking to amend Schedules A and C of the Ebonyi State Local Government Councils and Development Centres Regulations and Remunerations for Public and Political Office Holders Law No. 004 of 2008.
Under the new remuneration structure, local government supervisors will earn ₦230,000 monthly, while secretaries to the councils will receive ₦240,000.
Special Assistants to local government chairmen will receive ₦165,000 monthly.
For officials covered under Schedule C, legislative leaders will earn ₦300,000, while deputy leaders and councillors will receive ₦250,000 and ₦230,000, respectively.
The revised structure also places the monthly remuneration of Development Centre Coordinators at ₦277,000, while Management Committee Members will receive ₦226,000.
The Bill was considered and passed during plenary at the Legislative Complex along Nkaliki Road, Abakaliki, under the leadership of the Speaker of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Moses Ije Odunwa.
Presenting a letter from Governor Francis Nwifuru to the House, Speaker Odunwa said the proposed amendment focused mainly on the remuneration schedules for political and public office holders at the local government and development centre levels.
He explained that Schedule A covers local government chairmen, vice chairmen, supervisors, secretaries and special assistants to chairmen.
According to him, Schedule C applies to legislative leaders, deputy leaders, councillors, development centre coordinators and management committee members.
Leading the debate on the Bill, the Leader of the House, Kingsley Ikoro, said Section 7 of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, gives state Houses of Assembly the legislative authority to make laws concerning the structure and administration of local government councils.
Ikoro said the proposed legislation was specifically designed to review the existing remuneration schedules for the affected local government political office holders.
The House subsequently dissolved into a Committee of the Whole to examine and fine-tune the provisions of the Bill. The motion was seconded by the member representing Ezza South State Constituency, Hon. Friday Ogbuewu.
Following the Committee of the Whole session, plenary resumed and the Speaker presented the revised remuneration figures to lawmakers.
Odunwa commended Governor Nwifuru for his commitment to initiatives aimed at improving the welfare of residents and strengthening grassroots administration in Ebonyi State.
He also said the Assembly remained committed to collaborating with the executive arm of government in advancing the administration’s People’s Charter of Needs agenda.
The Leader of the House thereafter moved the motion for the passage of the amendment Bill. It was seconded by the member representing Ikwo North State Constituency, Hon. Ifeanyi Nwakpu.
The Speaker subjected the motion to a voice vote, after which the Bill was passed unanimously.
Odunwa subsequently directed the Clerk of the House, Mrs Edene Uche Blessing, to communicate the passage of the Bill to Governor Nwifuru.
The sitting was later adjourned following a motion moved by Ikoro and seconded by the member representing Ebonyi North West State Constituency, Hon. Aloysius Nwodo.
