The Ebonyi State Government has unveiled new policies to tackle abandoned projects, strengthen infrastructure, boost agricultural productivity, and improve residents’ welfare across the state..
The resolutions were reached during the State Executive Council meeting held on Tuesday and announced in Abakaliki by the Commissioner for Information and State Orientation, Barrister Ikeuwa Omebeh, during a press briefing on Wednesday.
According to Omebeh, the decisions are designed to promote good governance, enhance accountability, and accelerate economic development in key sectors.
A major highlight is the termination of all incomplete 2-kilometre rural road contracts. The government cited cases of contractors abandoning projects after receiving funds or delivering substandard work. It also ordered stricter verification processes for payment certificates to ensure transparency and prevent misuse of public funds.
To drive rural development and improve agricultural value chains, the state approved ₦300 million as counterpart funding for the Rural Access and Agricultural Marketing Project (RAAMP) in the 2026 fiscal year.
In the housing sector, the government is proposing legislation to regulate landlord-tenant relationships, including capping house agents’ fees at 2% of total rent to curb exploitation.
Additionally, a bill has been proposed to regulate the sale and handling of metal and electrical scraps, targeting the reduction of vandalism and improvement of environmental safety.
To boost mechanised farming ahead of the 2026 planting season, the government approved ₦500 million for the purchase of 250 power tillers. The initiative aims to reduce manual labour and encourage youth participation in agriculture.
On education infrastructure, the government directed the arrest of contractors handling the construction of 22 model secondary schools who failed to meet agreed project milestones despite receiving funds.
The state also recorded progress in its foreign scholarship programme, with 202 beneficiaries completing their Master’s degrees and advancing to doctoral studies abroad.
Other key approvals include a waste-to-energy and solar power partnership in Ezzamgbo, construction of a modern clinic at the Government House, ₦1.3 billion for air-conditioning the Ebonyi Trade Centre, and the reconstruction of the residence of late statesman, Dr Akanu Ibiam.
These measures reflect the state government’s renewed focus on infrastructure development, agricultural growth, transparency, and improved public service delivery.
