A devastating fire outbreak has destroyed a yam barn valued at over N4 million in Omege Noyo Alik community, located in Ikwo Local Government Area, Ebonyi State.
The incident, which occurred on Monday, also consumed additional goods estimated at more than N2 million, bringing the total loss to over N6 million.
According to affected residents, including Michael Mbam and Jonathan Mbam, they were away from home when the fire started. They said neighbours alerted them after noticing thick smoke rising from their compound.
The victims lamented that their primary source of livelihood, including yam barns reportedly worth over N2 million each, was completely destroyed in the blaze. They described the incident as a major setback and appealed for urgent assistance from the Ebonyi State Government and well-meaning individuals.
They specifically called on Governor Francis Nwifuru and other stakeholders to support them in recovering from the significant financial loss.
A resident of the area, Boniface Nome, described the fire incident as unfortunate and heartbreaking. He urged political leaders, community stakeholders in Ikwo, and the state government to come to the aid of the victims.
Sympathisers expressed gratitude that no lives were lost in the fire but joined in calling for intervention to cushion the impact of the disaster on the affected families.
As of the time of filing this report, the cause of the mysterious fire in Ikwo community remains unknown, with no official statement confirming the source of the blaze.
