The former Zonal Vice Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ebonyi Central Zone, Mr. Kevin Chukwu, has officially resigned from the party and defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), leading over 10,000 supporters into the party.
The mass defection took place at Enyimba Agalegu community in Ikwo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, drawing party leaders, loyalists, and residents from neighbouring communities.
Speaking during the event, Chukwu confirmed that he submitted his resignation letter to his ward chairman on January 8, a move he said followed wide consultations with his constituents and dissatisfaction with the current political direction of major political parties.
According to him, grassroots engagement played a decisive role in his decision to leave the PDP.
“Politics is local. You cannot practice politics away from your people. My political position was no longer serving the interest of my community, and they made that very clear to me,” he said.
Chukwu explained that his defection to the ADC also aligns with what he described as a growing national political realignment, noting that several influential politicians across Nigeria are embracing alternative platforms in response to public frustration over unfulfilled promises.
He stated that Nigerians are increasingly demanding credible leadership, accountability, and tangible development..
“We are tired of endless promises. Nigerians want leaders who will take responsibility and deliver real progress,” he added.
The former PDP chieftain said he has not yet decided whether to contest for any elective office in the 2027 general elections, stressing that his immediate priority is to consolidate his political base and strengthen the ADC structure in Ebonyi State.
“My focus now is to reorganize my political life. With ADC, I believe I can either contest or support leaders who truly mean well for the country,” he said.
Chukwu described the turnout at the event as overwhelming, claiming that more than 10,000 supporters joined him voluntarily, without financial inducement.
He urged Nigerians, particularly residents of Ebonyi State, to embrace what he called a new political direction and align with parties committed to the nation’s future.
Welcoming the defectors, the Ebonyi State Chairman of the ADC, Mrs. Jennifer Adibe, described the development as a major boost for the party ahead of the 2027 elections.
She said the decision of the new members followed a careful evaluation of the ADC’s manifesto and ideology.
“I am delighted to receive members from PDP, Labour Party, and other political parties led by Chief Kevin Chukwu. After reviewing our manifesto, they agreed that ADC is the right platform,” Adibe said.
According to her, all executive members within the defectors’ bloc have formally joined the ADC, assuring that the party will fully integrate them into its existing structure.
“This is a coalition built on unity. We will harmonize interests and ensure inclusiveness. ADC is an accommodating party, as symbolized by our handshake logo,” she stated.
Adibe added that unlike past political alliances, the ADC-led coalition is driven by credible leadership and a shared commitment to national development.
She also dismissed concerns about internal rivalry, emphasizing that the party would avoid parallel structures and promote unity among members.
The event concluded with the formal presentation of ADC membership cards to the new members.
Political observers view the defection as a significant boost for the ADC in Ebonyi State, as the party intensifies efforts to expand its influence ahead of the 2027 general elections.
