The Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria (MWAN), Ebonyi State chapter, has reaffirmed its commitment to expanding community health services and empowering women and children through ethical and impactful medical leadership.
During a colourful ceremony held at the Women Development Centre, Abakaliki, the association officially inaugurated Dr. Nkiruka Bridget Uche-Nwidagu as its 12th president. The event gathered top medical professionals, government dignitaries, and development partners across Ebonyi State. The governor’s wife, Mrs. Mary-Maudline Uzoamaka Nwifuru, was represented by the Commissioner for Women Affairs, Barr. Felicia Nwankpuma.
The Chief Medical Director of David Umahi Federal University Teaching Hospital, Professor Uzoma Agwu, commended MWAN for its plans to improve the health and well-being of women across local communities.
Outgoing president Dr. Lilian Nwobashi expressed gratitude for the association’s collective achievements during her tenure. She highlighted major milestones, including statewide schistosomiasis campaigns conducted in partnership with the Ministry of Health and the World Health Organisation, alongside extensive TV and radio sensitization programmes.
According to her, the association delivered over 3,000 personal hygiene packs to schoolgirls and more than 400 dignity kits to survivors of gender-based violence. MWAN also conducted several medical outreach programmes covering cervical and prostate cancer screening, hepatitis B and C testing, hypertension and obesity checks, and breast examination trainings.
She noted that the Ebonyi chapter produced 82 radio programmes and 28 television broadcasts aimed at boosting public health awareness. Dr. Nwobashi further celebrated the historic hosting of MWAN’s national secretariat in Ebonyi State for the first time.
In her acceptance speech, the new president, Dr. Nkiruka Uche-Nwidagu, described her emergence as both an honour and a divine responsibility. She pledged to uphold integrity, excellence, and ethical leadership while steering the association toward stronger community health outcomes.
This year’s event featured the theme: “Empowering Community Health: Transforming Women and Children’s Well-Being Through Ethical Leadership,” with the sub-theme: “One MWAN, One Vision; Empowering Communities, Uplifting Women and Children, Advancing Ethical Leadership.”
