Date:

A tragic incident occurred in Amangbala, Ohaisu community in Afikpo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State on Sunday, leaving one person dead during the annual Iko Ohaisu cultural festival.

The deceased, identified as Peter, reportedly lost his life after a disagreement with another villager, Daniel, escalated into violence. The clash happened around 1am inside the Ogo Amaokwu-Amangbala chambers where residents were preparing for the festival.

According to a community member, Oyim Chukwuemeka, the suspect allegedly entered the sacred chamber and began harassing people, demanding a ₦1,000 levy for the use of the Ogo, claiming he and his team had cleaned the venue.

When he approached Peter, the victim explained he was tired and had no money. His explanation was ignored, and the suspect allegedly attacked him with a bottle, causing a deep injury before fleeing the scene.

Peter was rushed to Maranatha Hospital, Amangbala, but despite efforts to save him, he died from excessive blood loss. Aggrieved youths later captured the suspect.

The incident disrupted the Iko Ohaisu festival and threw the community into tension as security agencies moved in to restore calm.

The Ebonyi State Police Command has confirmed the case. Police spokesperson, DSP Joshua Ukandu, stated that the suspect is already in custody and investigations have commenced.
