ASUU Strike: EBSU, AE-FUNAI Shut Down Academic Activities as Lecturers Join Nationwide Action

Date:

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) strike has fully grounded academic activities at Ebonyi State University (EBSU), Abakaliki, and Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Ndufu-Alike Ikwo (AE-FUNAI), following the union’s nationwide industrial action.

Confirming the development, the Chairperson of ASUU, EBSU chapter, Dr. Joseph Igwe, stated that all teaching and academic engagements had been suspended in compliance with directives from the union’s national leadership.

A visit to the EBSU CAS campus on Monday revealed an atmosphere of inactivity, as students who arrived for lectures were left stranded. Several classrooms and lecture halls were locked, with no academic staff in sight.

Similarly, at AE-FUNAI, the former ASUU Secretary, Dr. Joseph Chukwu, confirmed that lecturers at the institution had also joined the strike in solidarity with the union’s demands. He noted that no lectures were held as members fully complied with the industrial action.

The ongoing strike, declared by ASUU, seeks to press home the union’s long-standing demands from the Federal Government, including improved welfare for lecturers, better university funding, and the implementation of previous agreements.

As the strike enters a critical stage, students across Ebonyi State have expressed frustration over the disruption of academic activities, appealing for a speedy resolution between ASUU and the Federal Government.
