An Ebonyi-born journalist and publisher, Friday Alefia, has reportedly been in detention for over two weeks following allegations of defamation and cybercrime involving a federal lawmaker, Hon. (Comr.) Chinedu Ogah (OON), who represents the Ikwo/Ezza South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives.
Alefia, a university graduate and founder of the online news platform Naija News Today, was said to have been arrested in Lagos by operatives of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) and later transferred to Abuja for investigation. His arrest was reportedly carried out based on a court order obtained after publications alleged to have defamed the lawmaker surfaced online.
He is currently being held at the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) detention facility in Abuja.
Sources indicate that Alefia’s family has been unable to meet the ₦2 million bail condition reportedly issued by the court, while concerns grow over his health condition during detention.
As of press time, Hon. Chinedu Ogah has not released any official statement concerning the incident.
