Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, has declared that the recent coalition of opposition political parties poses no threat to his administration or political ambition. He emphasized that opposition is a constant in politics and should not cause panic among serious-minded politicians.
Speaking to journalists at the Government House in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State Governor said:
“Coalition doesn’t worry me. In politics, opposition is constant. As a politician, you should always expect it. We’ve even been expecting something like this, so why worry?”
Governor Nwifuru also revealed that he had previously submitted Ebonyi State’s stance on constitutional amendments to the National Assembly during his time as Speaker of the State House of Assembly.
“When I was Speaker, I presented the position of Ebonyi State on the constitutional amendment to the National Assembly,” he recalled.
During the weekend visit of the Senate Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, the governor renewed his call for the creation of additional states in the South East, citing regional imbalance in the current geopolitical structure.
“Of the six geopolitical zones in Nigeria, only the South East has five states. This imbalance can lead to resentment. The National Assembly must take steps to correct this through the constitutional review,” he asserted.
The Ebonyi State Governor further recommended that the office of the President should rotate among all six geopolitical zones to ensure equity and fairness.
“The South East has not produced a President since 1999. That’s unjust. If the presidency isn’t accessible to all zones, then the idea of geopolitical zoning loses its meaning,” he said.
In addition, Nwifuru urged for a review of Section 308 of the Constitution to extend immunity to leaders of the National and State Assemblies, including the Senate President, Deputy Senate President, Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, as well as Speakers and Deputy Speakers of State Houses of Assembly.
He also reiterated his strong support for the creation of state police, dismissing fears that such forces would be abused by governors.
