The Ebonyi State Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Princess Nkechinyere Iyioku, has commended the agricultural initiatives of Governor Francis Nwifuru, highlighting their impact on food affordability. According to Iyioku, the price of a 50kg bag of rice in the state has dropped significantly—from ₦40,000 to as low as ₦22,000.
Speaking with journalists in Abakaliki, Iyioku revealed that the state recently collaborated with agricultural experts from Thailand for a one-day intensive training on rice and livestock production. The program, aimed at improving farming techniques, benefitted over 100 farmers selected from across Ebonyi.
The Commissioner emphasized that the government’s proactive measures, including the free distribution of farming inputs and partnerships with international experts, have strengthened food security. She noted that since Governor Nwifuru’s administration began in 2023, food has become more available and affordable.
“In December, rice was selling between ₦35,000 and ₦40,000 per bag. Today, it ranges from ₦22,000 to ₦25,000,” Iyioku stated. She attributed this positive change to the renewed interest in farming and consistent government support.
Iyioku expressed optimism that rice prices could fall even further, possibly returning to pre-inflation rates of ₦10,000 to ₦12,000 per bag as more Ebonyi residents engage in agriculture.
