Ebonyi Senator Nwaebonyi Demands Police Accountability for 3,907 Missing Firearms

Date:

Senator Peter Nwaebonyi (Ebonyi North) has called on the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to account for 3,907 missing firearms flagged in the 2019 Auditor-General’s report before the 2025 budget can be approved.

Speaking on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily, Nwaebonyi, Vice Chairman of the Senate Public Accounts Committee, emphasized that transparency is crucial for security planning.

During a Senate hearing, AIG Suleiman Abdul, representing the Inspector-General of Police, failed to provide satisfactory explanations. Lawmakers rejected a closed-door session and summoned police leadership to reappear on January 17.

Nwaebonyi revealed that while some weapons were lost due to officers’ deaths, over 99% remain unaccounted for. He urged the police to provide full details before requesting new firearm allocations.

To ensure transparency, he proposed live broadcasts of the proceedings, stressing the need for accountability amid rising security concerns in Nigeria.
