Ebonyi State Introduces N50,000 Fine or Prosecution for Illegal Waste Disposal

Date:

The Ebonyi State Government has intensified efforts to maintain environmental cleanliness by banning indiscriminate refuse dumping in the state. Defaulters will face a fine of ₦50,000 or prosecution in the State Environmental Sanitation Court.

This directive was announced in a press release by the Ministry of Environment’s Head of Public Relations, Reuben Okorie, in Abakaliki. The ministry emphasized the need for residents to properly bag their waste and dispose of it only at approved dump sites or waste bins between 5:00 am and 8:00 pm.

“The Ministry of Environment is committed to ensuring the capital city, Abakaliki, remains clean and green. Waste from homes, businesses, schools, churches, hotels, and public spaces must be deposited at designated sites during the approved hours,” the statement read.

To enforce this, environmental marshals will monitor compliance, and offenders caught dumping waste illegally will be arrested.

The government urged residents to support Governor Francis Nwifuru’s efforts to create a healthier, cleaner, and more conducive environment for all.
