The Ebonyi State Government has stepped up its immunisation campaign to protect children against diphtheria and other vaccine-preventable diseases, while strengthening primary healthcare services across the state.
The state government is intensifying efforts to ensure that eligible children receive essential vaccines to prevent diphtheria and other infectious diseases.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr Moses Ekuma, disclosed this while briefing journalists in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital.
Ekuma described diphtheria as a serious infectious disease and highlighted measures introduced by the state government to improve healthcare delivery and strengthen its capacity to respond to public health emergencies.
According to him, the government has established three oxygen production plants across the state’s three senatorial zones to improve access to medical oxygen and support the treatment of patients requiring respiratory care.
He also disclosed that the government had introduced an ambulance service system and procured 100 motorcycles for health workers to address transportation challenges and improve access to healthcare services, particularly in primary healthcare facilities across Ebonyi State.
The commissioner noted that several medical personnel and healthcare workers had received training on the public health emergency response framework to enhance preparedness for disease outbreaks and other health emergencies.
Ekuma further listed the establishment of a diagnostic centre at Oferekpe Agbaja, equipped with two magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machines, among the government’s efforts to improve diagnostic services and strengthen healthcare infrastructure.
He added that the state had recently employed more than 1,000 personnel as part of measures to improve healthcare delivery, although further details of the recruitment were not provided in the report.
The immunisation campaign forms part of the state’s broader efforts to prevent infectious diseases, improve child health and strengthen primary healthcare services.
For parents and caregivers, ensuring that children receive their recommended vaccinations remains an important step towards preventing vaccine-preventable diseases. Eligible children should be taken to designated health facilities for immunisation and guidance from qualified healthcare workers.
