Osborn Umahi Advocates Corporate Approach to Governance, Promises Transformative Leadership in Ohaozara

Date:

At 28, civil engineer, philanthropist, and business executive Osborn Nweze Umahi is stepping into public service with a vision to introduce efficiency, innovation, and accountability into grassroots leadership.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) chairmanship candidate for Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State has gained attention for his promise to bring a private-sector approach to governance, focusing on measurable development and people-centred policies.

Coming from a family with a strong public service background, as the son of Nigeria’s Minister of Works and former Ebonyi State Governor, David Umahi, Osborn says his journey into politics is shaped not only by his family’s legacy but also by his experience in engineering, business, and community development.

“Growing up in a family committed to public service gave me a foundation, but my experiences in business and engineering have shaped my own perspective. The people are looking beyond promises; they want practical and measurable results,” Umahi said.

According to him, modern challenges require a new approach to leadership, adding that grassroots governance must adopt systems that promote efficiency and sustainable growth.

His decision to contest for local government chairman, despite expectations that he could pursue higher political positions, reflects his belief that local administration remains the closest point of contact between government and citizens.

“The local government is where meaningful change begins. If you want to strengthen a structure, you must start from its foundation,” he said.

Umahi explained that his emergence as a candidate followed extensive consultations with community members, including youths and traditional stakeholders, who encouraged him to transition his community-focused initiatives into public leadership.

He highlighted his previous involvement in philanthropy, business support programmes, and educational assistance as part of the foundation for his political ambition.

As an engineer, Umahi says his approach to governance is focused on practical solutions rather than political rhetoric. His campaign agenda centres on three major areas: infrastructure development, youth and women empowerment, and digital transformation at the grassroots level.

“Our focus is clear — improve infrastructure, create opportunities for young people and women, and use technology to make local government more effective,” he stated.

Speaking on the influence of his family name in politics, Umahi acknowledged his father’s contributions to Ebonyi State but stressed that he is building his own leadership identity.

“I respect my father’s achievements, but I am contesting as Osborn Nweze Umahi. My perspective comes from the private sector, innovation, and the need to build stronger human capacity and economic systems,” he said.

With the Ohaozara chairmanship election drawing closer, Umahi’s candidacy continues to attract attention across Ebonyi State and the Southeast region.

He said his ambition goes beyond winning an election, noting that his goal is to demonstrate that young Nigerians can take up leadership roles and deliver results through professionalism and accountability.
