The Abakaliki South Constituency football team has clinched the Ebonyi North Unity Cup trophy after defeating Izzi West Constituency in a tense penalty shootout at the Pa Ngele Oruta Township Stadium, Abakaliki.

The highly anticipated football competition, organized by the FON Youths Movement and spearheaded by its National President and Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Youth Mobilization, Comrade Chinedu Emerike, brought together teams from the four local government areas in Ebonyi North Senatorial Zone — Abakaliki, Ebonyi, Izzi, and Ohaukwu.

The tournament was sponsored by prominent businessman and philanthropist, Chief Chikodili Ojimba, whose support played a key role in the success of the grassroots sporting event aimed at promoting youth development and unity in Ebonyi State.

The Unity Cup football tournament attracted a large turnout of football fans, community leaders, and stakeholders from across the senatorial zone. Beyond competition, the event served as a platform to strengthen community bonds and showcase young football talents in Ebonyi North.

Presenting the trophy to the champions, Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, represented by the Commissioner for Youths and Sports Development, Hon. Richard Idike, applauded Chief Ojimba for his commitment to sports development and youth empowerment.

The governor emphasized that the competition not only discovered emerging football talents but also fostered peace and collaboration among communities in the zone. He reaffirmed the state government’s dedication to advancing sports infrastructure and youth-focused initiatives across Ebonyi State.

In his remarks, Chief Chikodili Ojimba reiterated his continued support for the administration of Governor Nwifuru, noting that his sponsorship of the Ebonyi North Unity Cup was driven by a passion for promoting love, tolerance, and unity among young people.

He encouraged youths to remain disciplined, dedicated, and focused on harnessing their talents for personal growth and community development.

He also announced plans to sponsor a statewide football tournament in the next edition, expanding participation to all local government areas in Ebonyi State.
