An Ebonyi-based entrepreneur and energy investor, Mr. Francis Aja Chukwu, has announced an ambitious plan to generate over 1,000 employment opportunities for youths and residents of the Edda clan in Edda Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
Chukwu, who is the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Okamkpa Oil & Gas Limited, said the initiative is part of a long-term strategy to drive job creation, economic empowerment, and energy access in the area over the next seven years.
Speaking during an interaction with journalists in Owutu Edda, the businessman explained that the establishment of the oil and gas company was inspired by the need to bring petroleum products closer to rural communities and reduce the hardship residents face while sourcing fuel, kerosene, and cooking gas—especially during festive periods.
According to him, the project also aims to curb unemployment by engaging local youths in productive ventures.
“Anyone who goes out daily to work will always return home able to support their family. That belief drives this investment,” Chukwu said.
He disclosed that the vision to site Okamkpa Oil & Gas Ltd in Edda received strong encouragement from the Chairman of Edda Local Government Area, Prince Chima Ekumankama, whose support helped the project overcome early challenges.
Providing insight into the company’s identity, Chukwu noted that Okamkpa—a word from the Edda dialect—means “greater than challenges,” a name he said reflects resilience and purpose rather than personal identity.
Beyond the oil and gas sector, the entrepreneur revealed plans to expand the company’s operations into agribusiness and hospitality, positioning the firm as a diversified investment hub and a one-stop business brand within the region.
On security concerns, Chukwu assured that the area remains peaceful, stressing that community ownership of the project guarantees its protection.
“This is the people’s business. They will protect what belongs to them,” he said.
He also commended the Ebonyi State Government under Governor Francis Nwifuru for creating an enabling environment for private-sector growth, while acknowledging the role of the immediate past governor and current Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, in laying a strong foundation for development in the state.
Chukwu further praised Prince Ekumankama for his administrative support, describing him as a key partner in the project’s success.
The Okamkpa Oil & Gas initiative is expected to significantly boost local employment, energy distribution, and economic development in Edda and surrounding communities in Ebonyi State.
