Ebonyi Government Takes Bold Step to Revamp Shopping Mall Management, Restores Power Supply

Date:

In a decisive move to revive the Ebonyi Shopping Mall and address growing concerns from the public, Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru has announced a comprehensive government intervention aimed at restoring proper management, improving infrastructure, and ensuring commercial convenience for citizens.

During a meeting held yesterday with mall managers, shop owners, and government officials, Governor Nwifuru reaffirmed the original vision of the mall: to promote economic activity in Ebonyi State, generate employment, and provide a modern shopping experience for residents.

“The primary objective of the construction of the Ebonyi Shopping Mall is to promote economic activity in the State, generate employment opportunities, and provide our citizens with commercial convenience. Each time I observe our people shopping at the mall and producing positive content in and around the environment, I am filled with immense pleasure”.

However, recent public outcry—particularly regarding inadequate electricity supply and poor facility management—prompted a government-led review of operations at the facility. Following the Governor’s inspection and feedback from stakeholders, several key resolutions were made:

  • The Ebonyi State Government will offset the mall’s existing electricity debt in line with its agreement with the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company (EEDC).
  • The Government will also negotiate with EEDC for a more sustainable and realistic monthly billing system for the mall in consideration of the current economic realities.
  • Responsibility for the maintenance and repair of critical infrastructure such as escalators, air conditioning units, and standby generators will now be handled directly by the state government.

As a result of these interventions, electricity supply to the Ebonyi Shopping Mall has been restored, rekindling optimism among shop owners and residents alike.

The government’s move signals a renewed commitment to improving commercial infrastructure and creating an enabling environment for business in Ebonyi State.
