Authorities Launch Investigation into Amasiri Kidnapping in Ebonyi

Date:

The Ebonyi State Police Command has confirmed the abduction of Uduma Idam-Chima, a woman reportedly kidnapped by suspected warlords in Amasiri, located in the Afikpo South Local Government Area of the state.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Joshua Ukandu, disclosed this in a statement on Friday, adding that the command has launched a full-scale investigation into the incident. Ukandu noted that the victim was allegedly abducted on June 14, 2025.

In reaction to the incident, the Oso-Edda Development Town Union, in Edda Local Government Area, condemned the abduction. The Union’s President-General, Ama Aba Emeh, described the act as a fresh provocation against the people of Oso-Edda.

The abduction has further intensified tensions between Oso-Edda and neighboring Amasiri, communities long embroiled in a boundary dispute. Despite recent peace efforts led by Governor Francis Nwifuru, including a meeting convened on April 30, 2025, hostilities persist.

Emeh recalled earlier attacks, including one on April 6, 2025, where suspected warlords killed six residents of Oso-Edda—among them a pregnant woman and her child—and destroyed properties valued at millions of naira. He also mentioned a similar incident on February 5, 2023, when farmers were kidnapped while working on their farmlands.

“This latest attack is not the first of its kind. We urge Governor Nwifuru, the Inspector General of Police, and the Ebonyi State Commissioner of Police to act swiftly to end these senseless attacks. We remain committed to peace because our governor is a leader who stands for peace,” Emeh stated.
