Okposi’s Own: Brig-Gen Amechi Agwu Becomes First Ebonyian to Lead 23 Armoured Brigade

Date:

Brigadier General Amechi Agwu, a native of Okposi in Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, has been appointed commander of the Nigerian Army’s 23 Armoured Brigade in Yola, Adamawa State. According to a routine posting signal released by Army Headquarters, he is the first senior officer from Ebonyi State to head an armoured brigade.

The 23 Armoured Brigade controls armour and mechanised units deployed across Adamawa, Taraba and parts of Borno, making it a central formation in ongoing counter-insurgency operations in the North-East. Agwu is expected to assume duty before the end of May, taking over from Brigadier General Mohammed Garba, who has been redeployed to Abuja.

Commissioned into the Armour Corps after graduating from the Nigerian Defence Academy, Agwu has spent more than 30 years in service. His record includes command of armour and mechanised battalions, participation in United Nations peacekeeping missions and staff appointments at Army Headquarters, most recently as Chief of Staff, Department of Training. He is a graduate of the Senior Staff Course, Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji, and has completed advanced armour programmes in Egypt and the United States.

State officials, traditional leaders and civil-society organisations in Ebonyi have issued statements congratulating the new commander. Many described the posting as a significant milestone for the state’s representation within the armed forces.
