Ebonyi State House of Assembly Approves Creation of 12 New LGAs

Date:

The Ebonyi State House of Assembly has given the green light for a referendum aimed at creating 12 additional local government areas (LGAs), expanding the current number from 13 to 25.

During a session at the Assembly Complex in Abakaliki, lawmakers argued that the move would enhance governance by bringing leadership closer to the people and addressing developmental challenges.

The proposed new LGAs include:

  • Ikwo South and Ikwo North (from Ikwo LGA)
  • Ekumenyi (from Abakaliki LGA)
  • Ebyia (from Izzi LGA)
  • Ndiagbo (from Edda LGA)
  • Ishielu South (from Ishielu LGA)
  • Akaeze, Ukaba, and Effium (from Ivo, Onicha, and Ohaukwu LGAs)
  • Izzikworo, Amohai, and Imoha (from Ezza-South, Ezza-North, and Afikpo LGAs)

According to the legislators, this expansion is expected to address concerns over population density and land distribution, ensuring a more balanced administrative structure. The motion, sponsored by Chief Whip Hon. Nkemka Okoro-Onuma and seconded by Hon. Ifeanyi Nwakpu, was unanimously passed, with Speaker Rt. Hon. Moses Odunwa presiding over the vote.

If implemented, the new LGAs could drive economic growth and improve governance across Ebonyi State.
