Ebonyi State Rescues 800 Indigenes Displaced by Lagos Demolition

Date:

The Ebonyi State Government has facilitated the return of over 800 indigenes who were left homeless following a demolition exercise in Ilaje, Lagos Island.

The demolition, reportedly carried out by the Lagos State Government to clear unauthorized structures, rendered many residents—including those from Ebonyi—without shelter. In response, Governor Francis Nwifuru directed immediate action to bring affected Ebonyi citizens back home.

Last week, families, including young children, were transported back to Ebonyi via buses provided by the state. Many had been living in unsafe conditions, including under bridges, after losing their homes.

Chief Valentine Okike, the Commissioner for Special Duties and Focal Person for Ebonyi Indigenes in the Diaspora, described the situation as dire. “Seeing children as young as three years old in such conditions was deeply distressing. The governor wasted no time in ensuring their safe return,” he said.

While residents from other states were also affected, Ebonyi stands out as one of the few that took swift action to assist its displaced citizens. The move underscores Governor Nwifuru’s dedication to the welfare of Ebonyi people.
