Nurses Protest in Abakaliki After Patient’s Relative Brutally Assaults Nurse

Date:

There is unrest in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital, as nurses protest following a brutal attack on one of their colleagues by a patient’s relative.

According to reports, the incident occurred on Monday at the Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki (FETHA), located along the Abakaliki-Enugu Expressway. Witnesses say the nurse was mercilessly flogged, leading to severe injuries, including the loss of a tooth.

A protesting nurse, who spoke anonymously, lamented the frequent mistreatment of healthcare workers by some patients’ relatives.

“This morning, a relative of a patient flogged our member mercilessly and removed one of her teeth. We are not happy, and that’s why we are protesting,” the nurse said.

As of the time of filing this report, efforts to determine the reason behind the assault were unsuccessful.

The nurses have vowed to continue their protest until concrete steps are taken to protect healthcare workers from such violent attacks.
