Ebonyi Governor, Francis Nwifuru, Appeals for Action Against Sit-at-Home Protests in Southeast

Date:

Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has called on Major General Oluyemi Olatoye, the newly appointed General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 82 Division of the Nigerian Army in Enugu, to increase efforts to put an end to the ongoing sit-at-home protests imposed by non-state actors in the Southeast region.

Governor Nwifuru made this request during Major General Olatoye’s courtesy visit to the Government House in Centenary City, Abakaliki. He also encouraged security agencies to implement a reward system aimed at enhancing the morale of their personnel.

“I am confident that you are familiar with the security challenges in the Southeast. God has been with us, along with the dedicated military officers stationed in our state. We assure you of our continued support and recognition for the service of good officers,” Governor Nwifuru expressed.

The governor added that his administration has been rewarding security personnel through financial incentives and vehicle gifts to acknowledge their unwavering commitment.

In response, Major General Olatoye thanked Governor Nwifuru for his steadfast support of the military and assured him that the Nigerian Army remains committed to maintaining peace and order in the state.

“I took office as the GOC of 82 Division on January 27, 2025. The purpose of this visit is to familiarize myself with the operational challenges in the region, strengthen collaboration between agencies, and understand sector-specific issues,” Olatoye said.

He also praised the governor’s efforts in boosting military morale, particularly through financial rewards for outstanding officers, adding, “I appreciate the respect and recognition you give to the military. Your commitment to ensuring seamless inter-agency collaboration is truly commendable.”
