A case of alleged assault has emerged in Ebonyi State following an attack on journalist and THISDAY correspondent, Benjamin Nworie, in Abakaliki.
Nworie, a former Vice Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) in the state, reported that suspected political thugs attacked him at his residence in Ugwuechara during the early hours of Monday.
According to his account, the attackers forcefully entered his premises, physically assaulted him, and issued threats against his life and family. He noted that neighbours intervened, preventing the situation from escalating further.
The journalist, in a petition to the Ebonyi State NUJ Council and the Correspondents’ Chapel, linked the incident to ongoing tensions, including alleged disruptions caused by construction activities near his home.
He also raised alarm over his safety, urging security agencies to investigate the incident and ensure protection for him and his family.
However, the Chairman of Ishielu Local Government Area, Peace Agwu, has denied any involvement in the alleged attack. She described the accusation as unfounded and called on the journalist to provide verifiable evidence.
“I have no involvement in the alleged attack. He should present proof to support his claims,” the council chairman stated.
The incident has sparked concerns about journalist safety in Ebonyi State, with calls for a thorough investigation into the alleged attack and accountability for those responsible.
