Residents of Ohatekwe Ukawu in Onicha Local Government Area of Ebonyi State have banished a 20-year-old man, identified as Oforbuike Damian, following the alleged murder of his mother.
The tragic incident, which occurred over the weekend, reportedly left the community in shock and mourning. According to eyewitness accounts, the suspect allegedly attacked his mother with a machete, leading to her death before fleeing into a nearby forest.
Local youths mobilized in large numbers, tracked him to the forest, and apprehended him. He was later paraded around the community before being officially banished, with strict warnings never to return.
Confirming the incident, the councillor representing the area, Nweke Maduabuchi, disclosed that over 200 youths were involved in the search operation that led to the suspect’s arrest. He added that the suspect has since been handed over to the police for further investigation and possible prosecution.
In a viral video circulating online, the suspect allegedly confessed to committing the act, citing personal grievances. He claimed the attack was triggered by his mother’s refusal to assist him with basic needs and support his brother’s plan to establish a barbing salon after completing his apprenticeship.
Meanwhile, the remains of the deceased were transported to a morgue by members of the community.
The incident has sparked conversations around mental health, youth violence, and community justice in Ebonyi State, as authorities continue investigations into the case.
