EBSU Graduates Its First First-Class Anatomy Student: Anoke Chigaemezu Emmanuel Makes History

Date:

For the first time in the history of Ebonyi State University’s Department of Human Anatomy, a student has graduated with First Class Honours. Anoke Chigaemezu Emmanuel, an indigene of Onicha Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, has set a new academic record by finishing with a CGPA of 4.50, a feat never before achieved in the department since its inception.

In an exclusive interview, Emmanuel shared that Human Anatomy wasn’t his initial choice of study. Like many students, he had to embrace an alternative course when his first preference didn’t materialize. However, rather than dwell on disappointment, he made a conscious decision to strive for excellence. “I’ve always believed in doing my best wherever I find myself, even if it’s not what I originally wanted,” he said. This mindset became his driving force.

He credited his success not to any extraordinary strategy, but to consistency, adaptability, and discipline. “I studied like every other determined student, but I paid close attention to how learning and assessments worked in our environment and aligned my efforts accordingly,” he explained. His approach included never missing classes, attending tutorials, reviewing lecture notes daily, and tailoring his revision to match lecturers’ expectations—all of which demanded intense discipline and commitment.

Despite his quiet and introverted nature, Emmanuel found himself unexpectedly thrust into a leadership role in his second year. A new policy at EBSU appointed class representatives based on academic performance, and with the highest CGPA, he was selected to serve. Though hesitant at first, he eventually accepted the responsibility after much persuasion and resolved that it would not compromise his academic goals. True to his word, he balanced both leadership and academics with impressive dedication.

Challenges still arose, including unexpected exam results and periods of self-doubt. Yet, he pressed on. “Even when things didn’t go as planned, I never allowed it to stop me. I kept pushing,” he recalled.

Emmanuel hopes his achievement inspires others in the department and the university at large. For years, students believed it was impossible to graduate with First-Class honors in Anatomy at EBSU—a stigma that discouraged serious academic pursuit. His milestone challenges that narrative, proving that excellence is attainable with determination and the right mindset.

Looking ahead, Emmanuel has no plans to stop here. He intends to pursue postgraduate studies, potentially up to the Ph.D. level, and explore other areas within Anatomy or Medicine. His advice to students is clear: “Don’t let anyone make you feel less because of the course you’re studying. Stay focused, build meaningful academic relationships, and never stop learning. Success isn’t far when you’re intentional.
