EBSU’s PhD Holder Still Working as a Cleaner: A Tale of Struggles

Date:

Dr. Enyi Onyebuchi Paul, a PhD holder in Mathematics Education, has been working as a cleaner at Ebonyi State University (EBSU) since 2007. Despite earning a B.Sc. in 2013, an M.Sc. in 2017, and a PhD in 2022, he remains stuck in the same position, earning less than ₦70,000 per month.

His case has raised concerns about the lack of merit-based career advancement at EBSU. Reports suggest that under the current Vice Chancellor, individuals from outside the university were hired for roles Dr. Enyi is qualified for, while his requests for promotion were overlooked due to a lack of influential connections within the institution.

This situation has sparked conversation, with advocates like Godfrey Chikwere calling for greater fairness in the academic system and urging the community to take action. Dr. Enyi’s experience highlights the challenges faced by qualified individuals without the right networks, despite years of dedication.

Will EBSU address the issue and offer Dr. Enyi the academic role he deserves? His story is a reminder of the need for equal opportunity and meritocracy within Nigerian universities.
